Sydney Stewart Rose is currently reading for a DPhil in Archaeology at the University of Oxford under the supervision of Prof. Dan Hicks (Curator of World Archaeology, Pitt Rivers Museum).
After recently completing an MPhil in Archaeology at the University of Cambridge, Sydney’s research explores contemporary archaeology through repatriation, restitution, and returns at the Pitt Rivers Museum. Sydney’s DPhil research is centred on the return of material culture to Maori communities.
After studying for a BA in Classics in Quebec, Sydney earned a Master of Museum Studies from the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto. Under the supervision of Dr. Cara Krmpotich and Dr. Seamus Ross, Sydney’s research explored contemporary and digital archaeologies in the wake of the Syrian Conflict.
Sydney received the Vivian and David Campbell Fellowship in 2017, which supported her work with the diverse collections at the Art Museum at the University of Toronto. Thanks to further funding from the Government of Canada, Sydney also has intimate experience with copyright and reproduction policies and has written extensively about material culture, international heritage interventions, and feminism in the digital journals “The Iguana” and “ReelHoney”.
